Who should attend?

This course is aimed at registered nurses, nursing associates or allied healthcare professionals who are new to, or early in their development of phototherapy skills. This interactive course supports best practice as outlined in the British Association of Dermatologists - Staff Training and Education Standards which recommends phototherapy clinicians attend a phototherapy course at least once every three years.

Programme overview

The course is offered as a blended learning format offering pre-attendance online learning material on a bespoke learning platform, followed by 1 day face to face practical learning in our clinical department.

 

The virtual learning includes interactive lectures and videos. This is accessible three weeks prior to the face-to-face event and for one month following course completion to allow the learner to consolidate or revisit the material.

 

A multiple-choice test can be found on the platform which will help assess your level of knowledge pre and post course completion. The face-to-face day encompasses live presentations, an expert panel session for questions and workshops/ demonstrations on the phototherapy unit.

 

The course programme has been developed by a multi-professional team of experts including a Medical Physics team, Consultant Dermatologists and Specialist Phototherapy nurses.

The face-to-face teaching programme includes a selection of tailored lectures in the morning, followed by workshops/live demonstrations in our phototherapy department.

 

Theory lectures (pre-attendance and face to face) will include but not limited to: Introduction to UV light, Role of the Medical Physics team, Phototherapies- Indications/contraindications, Protocols, Dose calculations, Managing side effects and adverse events, Photosensitising drugs, Photodermatoses, Equipment- Risk assessment and best safety practice.

 

The practical sessions will cover: Patient Initial Assessment, MED testing, MPD testing, Top tips on patient positioning and counselling in machines, UVA1 administration, PUVA initiation/administration station.

 

A course certificate is provided upon completion.

Employer Funding Process


If your Trust / Employer is funding your place on the Phototherapy Course 2027, you will need a purchase order (PO) from the finance department for your place of work. The PO will need to be sent to info@stjohnsdermacademy.com

 

The PO must include each delegates' name, email, the course name (PHOTOTHERAPY 2027) and the sum of the course (£595 per person VAT exempt). As a contact, please include info@stjohnsdermacademy.com

 

If your Trust does not have Guy's and St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust on their requisition system please use the bank details in here.​ Once we receive the PO we will invoice your Trust / Employer, and at that point instructions on how to register for the course will be provided.

Places are limited and are allocated on a first come - first served basis, so please register early to avoid disappointment. Please note overnight accommodation is not provided and it is the responsibility of the delegate to arrange this independently.
