Who Should Attend?

This course is aimed at registered healthcare professionals, especially nurses, who are new to, or early in their development of skin surgery skills.

Programme Overview

The skin biopsy course is designed to introduce the learner to practical skills in dermatological surgery. It is a blended learning experience involving 2 days of face-to-face teaching delivered by experts in the field of dermatological surgery, alongside access to our bespoke online learning platform, housing our skin surgery lectures and procedural videos.

The face-to-face teaching programme includes a selection of tailored theory lectures in the mornings, followed by supervised surgical technique practice in the teaching laboratory. We maintain a high ratio of students to supervisors throughout all practical sessions.

Theory lectures (pre-attendance and face to face) will include: skin histopathology, surgical anatomy, local anaesthetic, medico-legal aspects of skin surgery, minor surgery planning, surgery preparation, surgical wound care, and potential complications of surgery.

The practical sessions will cover: local anaesthetic administration, basic biopsy techniques (shave, punch), skin lesion excision, along with suturing and haemostasis techniques.

A course certificate is provided upon completion.

Testimonials

The Gordon Museum was an amazing venue. Food delicious each day! The surgical techniques taught have improved my surgical skills greatly. I also feel that I have extended my clinical knowledge in anatomy and patient consent. I also loved the BSDS booklet we were given and the online learning. Fantastic course.

The venue was fantastic and the teaching was delivered with real enthusiasm.

Excellent course and would recommend to all interested. Highlights - The Gordon Museum was a superb location for the training. Very much enjoyed presentation by Consultant Dermatologist in Anatomy and Physiology - extremely useful and very well presented. Day 2 Practical was excellent - many new skills learnt and speed of learning was perfect.

I loved that we had a high level of supervision during the practical sessions. All the advisors were excellent.
